Client Corner: 50 Years of Marriage (but Still on Trial)

In Articles, Articles: Salt Lake City Office, SLC Spring 2025 by Scott Dougan

Cindy and I are celebrating fifty years of marriage this May, and while I like to joke that she’s still on trial, the truth is I couldn’t have asked for a better partner in life. My career in retail focused on developing people, which led us to move fourteen times over the years. No matter where we landed, Cindy always found ways to give back—first by volunteering in our kids’ schools and later by sewing quilts, blankets, and surgery dolls for hospitals. Her generosity has been a constant in our ever-changing life together.

These days, retirement looks a little different than we imagined. Thanks to Cindy’s encouragement, we now volunteer as “cuddlers” in the NICU at the women’s hospital, comforting premature infants—a role that has brought us immense joy and perspective. While I still enjoy flyfishing, cycling, and woodworking, nothing compares to the fulfillment we get from these tiny, resilient babies. To mark our golden anniversary, we’re heading to Maui this May, grateful for the life we’ve built with three children, five grandkids, and one great-granddaughter. A special thanks to Elevated Retirement Group, whose guidance gave us the peace of mind to embrace this next chapter with confidence. Aloha,
