Client Corner: Let’s Explore

In Articles, Articles: Salt Lake City Office, SLC Winter 2025 by Scott Dougan

We have been successful business owners, entrepreneurs, and adventure-driven people who love exploring and pioneering. Even though retired, we still pursue these avenues for a gratifying life. We love traveling, especially to beautiful mountainous areas. Together, we enjoy hiking, camping, snowshoeing, and Nordic skiing, while Bob also loves Alpine skiing and golf.

Bob’s corporate career with a large public corporation allowed him to visit 47 states and every bordering Canadian province. In retirement, we set goals to visit Hawaii, Alaska, and West Virginia. This summer, encouraged by Sean Lee, we designed a trip to Alaska. In July, we flew to Anchorage, met Ann’s cousin from Juneau at our Airbnb, and spent a week catching up on family memories. We then took the Alaskan RR Train to Fairbanks, stopping to see Denali and enjoying two memorable 12-hour trips meeting passengers and building relationships.

Ann’s favorite uncle’s family lived in Fairbanks, where Dr. Charles Davis, a music department head at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, left his mark. We visited the Performing Arts Hall named after him and met the current head, who knows the family. As an accomplished violinist, Ann cherished this part of the trip.

Thanks to ERG’s advice on retirement planning, we enjoy great health and wonder how we once found time for work.team, we wonder how we had time to work outside of the hobbies we used to call work.
